How to Maintain Your Roof
When you’ve been roofing in South Bend for over 70 years, you’ve seen it all. The Midwest experiences some of the most intense, destructive weather in the United States. There’s only so much a homeowner can do to maintain their roof, as nature will always run its course.
Clayton Hoover and Sons Roofing can suggest some maintenance you can do yourself in order to protect your roof.
There’s very little that can be done to prevent Roof Damage caused by wind, snow, hail, UV rays, and flying debris. Although you can’t control the weather, simple upkeep can improve the longevity of your roof. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to keep their roof clean and free of algae, trash, clogged gutters, and grime- as these could result in long-term damage. You don’t necessarily have to hire a professional to take care of your roof, as long as you use your best judgment.
Here are some things to look out for when inspecting your roof for damage or concerns.
1. Shingles
Keep a close eye to detect any missing or damaged shingles. Simply hosing the shingles down and keeping them free of dirt can reduce the risk for algae, moss, and fungal growth that can compromise your roof’s integrity.
If you notice that some shingles on the roof are worn, damaged, or missing, you could potentially replace them yourself. Just act quickly, as missing shingles can interfere with your entire roofing system.
2. Replace Sealant
Replace the roof sealant as needed. Inspect every area of the roof where it’s been sealed and identify any signs of cracking or wear and tear. If it’s cracking and worn, scrape or peel it off and put on fresh sealant.
3. Trim Overhanging Branches
During your self-inspection, be on the lookout for trees that are growing near your home. If there are branches hanging too close to your roof, give them a trim. Falling leaves will collect on the roof and retain moisture, making your shingles much weaker. If this remains unsolved for a long time, it may result in even more damage to the entire roofing structure.
4. Clean the Gutters
Gutters that clog up can cause a lot of damage to your roof. The water accumulating in gutters can easily make its way underneath your roofing structure. Basically, watch out for debris and keep your roof as dry as you can.
5. Maintain Your Chimney
If you notice cracked or missing pieces on/in your chimney, ensure you replace them as soon as possible. It may be hard to keep track of the status of your chimney. If you aren’t sure, call a professional. Clayton Hoover and Sons would be happy to help.
Routine roof maintenance is important so make sure you know what to do to take care of it. Sometimes, you may not be able to spot a problem from the outside. Clayton Hoover is the Midwest’s best option for a safe and affordable roofing project.
